What is a Colonoscopy Procedure

A colonoscopy is the visual examination of the large intestine (colon) using a lighted, flexible fiber optic or video endoscope. For colonoscopy surgery, the flexible colonoscope is a truly advanced piece of equipment, with the ability to be directed and moved around the many bends of the colon.

At United Endoscopy, we offer two types of colonoscopes; the first being a purely fiber optic scope with a bundle of glass fibers that collect the lighted images at one end and transfer them to the eye piece, and the second being the newer video colonoscope, using a small, optically sensitive computer chip at the end of the scope. The computer chip transmits electronic signals up the scope to a computer which then displays the image on a large video screen.

There is also an open channel in our colonoscopes to allow other instruments to pass through in order to perform biopsies, remove polyps or inject solutions, as needed.
